This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Do not buy this edition: as reader unfriendly as it gets. It has small print, no margins. No publisher mentioned! This is a wonderful book, but should be done by a reputable publisher. Disgrace for those who put it together in this format.Product details

Hans Brinker; or The silver skates a story of life in Holland Mary Mapes Dodge Books Reviews
It is a classic but is written in old English so is difficult to read.
I had never read this story before, even though I had heard some things about it. Honestly, it is wonderful to read the descriptions of the countryside and to read about typical boys during that age. I wouldn't want to live there, but the land and the people sound fascinating.
I bought this book for my wife (the '69 Classic Press edition), and she really enjoyed reading it. The Classic Press edition has a lot of extra information to help young readers understand more about Dutch culture and customs, which is very cool. The illustrations by Dennis A. Dierks are good, having the dated appearance of illustrations from that time. Our daughter loves the Disney movie adapted from the book and first watched it at age 3. My wife tells me that the movie is more light-hearted and concise than the book.
From childhood, this has always been one of my favorite stories. I love how through all the struggles the Brinker family endured, they worked hard and got through it together. Even though they may have gotten discouraged at times, they never gave up. Another thing I truly appreciated, they were content with what they had and never resented their friends for having more. They never gave up on their dreams and looking to the future for better days to come. This is such a refreshing book, very inspiring. It has always retained its magic for me from many years ago.
I can't believe I didn't read this as a child! If you like historical fiction, and a good story to let your imagination go to work, this is for you. My mother bought it because she read it as a child and just wanted to enjoy it again. She had me read it, she read it and now another friend is reading this book.
Ordered this for my niece. My mother was from the Netherlands and skated in the ice skating races on the canals
This is a classic I missed reading in my younger years. The story takes place during a winter in the mid 1800s in Holland and contains a little more Dutch history than some kids may have the patience for, but this old-fashioned story is wonderful and would be a good read through the holidays. I know a lot of home-school mom's like me who would recommend it as a read aloud. I have the Disney movie of it but was waiting to watch it until I finished the book.
